Winter 2012

Newsletter

Esperanza loves the camera!

Greetings from Sun Gate,

It was a very busy fall and that's my only excuse for not preparing a fall newsletter. The holidays were here and gone and we caught our breath and relaxed some. The alpacas enjoyed the summer grasses, belly bathes, and fall leaves. We enjoyed our one cria, watched her grow and collect all kinds of barnyard goodies in her fine fleece. Our ranch day was a huge success and our newly formed 4-H club is getting organized, and best of all - we become grandparents! We hope you enjoy our news, pictures, and everyone including our family of critters wishes you a wonderful blessed 2012.

Our first grandbaby arrived much earlier than expected at only 1 lb 7 oz. He is truly a miracle baby. Proud parents, Philip and Paula, have been through a lot, but are so blessed to have this little fellow in their lives. He has been home for nearly two months and is now up to nearly 11 lbs. We made a quick trip over to Salt Lake to see him (not able to hold him) in August. Our next trip will be a special one as we get to hold, snuggle, and spoil him! Oh, can't wait!

4-H Update

Our club contributed eight Christmas shoeboxes that were sent to children in need in Mexico and Haiti.  We also have started some projects for fair like working with alpacas, leather crafting, and archery.  The October hayride was a fun event. We’ll be doing some crocheting, knitting and making needle and wet felted projects.

What a fun hayride!

Paul and Penny both work for Natrona County School District.   In our spare time we love being home caring for all our animals which include 3 beagles, 1 corgie, 1 cat, 9 ducks, 2 rabbits, 2 lambs, 30 alpacas, and 1 huge llama.  This is us in our element!

Paul & Penny - At our best!

We hope that you enjoyed our newsletter. Please return to our website to see more pictures, get more news, and learn about upcoming events and happenings at Sun Gate.  The alpacas and all of us here wish you a blessed new year filled with all good things.

Sincerely,

Paul & Penny Van Hise

Ranch Day 2011

Korina helping a little guest learn to lead an alpaca

The weather was great, the crowd pleasing, the alpacas curious and loving the attention.  This was our 5th annual ranch day where we open our place to the community. We estimated 250-300 people attend our 6-hour event. This gives us an opportunity to introduce the public to the alpaca, the alpaca lifestyle, and the products made from alpaca fiber.  Our ranch store offers natural alpaca yarns from our own alpacas, handmade items from our fiber, and various other alpaca products from Peru. This year's activities included an obstacle course, and painting alpaca wooded cutouts. Visitors are welcome year around.  Please call ahead to schedule a time.

12 Days of Christmas Store

This was our second year to be a member of a traditional Christmas store in Casper.  We enjoyed seeing new and returning customers, visitors from our ranch, and people we met at the local Farmer's Market. The store opens in mid-November and features a well-rounded variety of gifts.  We share the responsibility of finding a location, setting up the store, working shifts, and taking down after a wonderful season. This gives our ranch store a second home and better location for people to shop for those wonderfully warm and fashionable alpaca products to share with friends and family. The picture above was a part of our 2011 display.  We would like to thank our customers and hope to see you again next year!
